I got a message last week from a parent asking if she should sign up for a recruiting platform her son’s teammate is using. Not the first time I’ve gotten that message, and probably won’t be the last. So instead of answering it one family at a time, let’s just talk about it here. Are soccer recruiting services actually worth it, or not?
If you’ve already spent money on a recruiting service and felt like you got a bunch of form emails and not much else, I want you to know that’s an incredibly common experience, not a sign you did something wrong, so don’t fault yourself.
Plenty of families have paid real money, sometimes a few hundred dollars, sometimes a few thousand, for a recruiting platform, expecting it to open doors and for things to change for their players in a matter of weeks. What actually shows up is a profile page, some templated coach emails, and a stream of interest from schools nobody researched, sometimes schools that don’t even offer the major your son or daughter wants.
Services like these aren’t a scam, in every regard. Reviews are genuinely mixed, some families do get real value, and plenty of others walk away feeling like they paid for spam. If I’m being honest, I think that’s the median experience, based on everything I’ve seen and everything families tell me. So again, if that’s happened to you, you’re not being paranoid or alone in that. You just paid for something that was never going to do what you needed it to do.
My Honest Take on Recruiting Platforms
I’m not going to tell you every recruiting platform is a scam, because that’s not my honest belief either. Most of them are exactly what they say they are: infrastructure. A database. A way to organize film, contacts, and profiles in one place instead of forty scattered emails.
And infrastructure can be useful. But it’s not the same thing as a coach actually wanting your player… A database can’t make their film worth watching. It can’t make their emails sound like a serious player wrote it instead of a form letter. It can’t tell you honestly whether they’re actually ready for the level he’s aiming at. Or whether the student-athlete experience at those particular universities is going to be right depending on your players’ personalities, aspirations, and ambitions.
The service in and of itself is never the missing piece. It’s probably something that just feels like doing something, which matters when you’re anxious, feel like you’re running out of time, and are looking for a productive next step.
3 Questions to Ask Before You Spend Another Dollar
Before you renew, upgrade, or sign up for anything, including anything with my name on it, ask these three things:
- Does this actually improve what a coach sees, or just organize what already exists? A database can store his film and contacts. It can’t tell him what a coach is actually looking for. That takes hearing it directly from real college coaches, in their own words, which is a different thing than a form letter template. And following trusted guidance to start building the kind of player profile that is recruitable.
- Am I paying for access, or paying into something that keeps showing up? A list of coaches doesn’t change month to month. What actually helps is a community of serious players and parents around you, plus monthly access to a mentor where questions get answered live, not a login you check once and forget.
- If we stopped paying for this today, would anything be different in 90 days? A one-time platform fee doesn’t really answer that question. The access itself doesn’t do much for him between now and then. A community you’re a part of, real educational content, and mentorship your player shows up to, month after month, actually can.
Sometimes You Already Have What You Need
I want to say this plainly and honestly because sadly, almost nobody in this space will: some families reading this don’t need to spend another dollar on any recruiting product right now. If your player already has strong film, knows how to reach out to coaches themself, and understands their realistic level, plays at the right kind of club, and has been developing the right habits on their own, the next right move might just be doing the work, believing in the compound effect, and letting time do its thing.
What I Did Instead as a Player
I never used recruitment services and my parents never paid for anyone to send emails and do research on my behalf. It was much more so about getting myself into the right, competitive environment (which may be hard to discern), developing the habits, and building my confidence so that I could be the kind of player who had the courage to make the kind of plays that make players stand out on the field. It’s those kinds of routines, systems, and direction, aimed toward constructing the player who will become undeniable to college coaches, that is paramount. As opposed to putting your player in different environments, or paying for recruitment services, or driving hours on end every week to go to a different club, while your player continues to practice poorly and engage with the wrong kinds of daily habits.
The player… building the player… is the most important. Always.
So, Are Soccer Recruiting Services Worth It?
My answer would be sometimes…
They’re worth it if your player’s film and profile are already strong and you just need the organization. They’re not worth another dollar if you’re hoping a database will do the work that only an honest, ongoing read on their game can actually do.
